Interview with Christianity Priest :)

What was the process that leads the priest from a follower to a leader?
-If you are a truly believer, then we must struggle and learn a lot about god and the bible. Usually, if you want to be a priest, the followers will have to study hard and study forever about Christianity, and then we can become priests. Churches often have festivals to celebrate the anniversary of 35 years being a priest. Often the memories that the church have will recruit new priests.

Have there been any situations when you are not sure about your belief?
-With me, never. According to my life, if I want to be a part of Catholicism, we must have faith in our religion. If you do not have faith your religion, then you are not a 100% follower. If you are true followers, you will believe in Jesus and believe in Catholicism.

Why did you choose to believe in Christianity over the others?
-When I was a little boy, my parents are Catholic and my parents brought me to the church so that I can be baptized. And so I was taught to believe in Christianity. Almost every kid will follow their parents’ religion because as soon as they were born, their parent will decide their child’s religion.

What does it take to be a good priest and a good leader?
- If he has become a priest then he must enforce the laws of God. In the Bible there are many rules and so the priests must follow so that will be able to become a good leader. Is not easy to become a good priest, you must learn and communicate with gods every day.

Can other change their religion and be part of Christianity?
-Of course. Jesus created everything, he create human, environment, animals…. Jesus will always welcome everybody to be part of Christianity.

How do the priests convert someone to be a part of the religion?
-The priest usually encouraged people to be part of Christianity by teaching them about it. He would read the bible, explain to people about how Jesus created everything.

How do the priests communicate with Jesus?
-The monks and priests normally contact with Jesus through prayer. Many times Jesus appears right in front of our eyes. God can appear in many possible formats. Like in dream, into a man, into the trees, an animal, a picture ... For example: If we see a cross between the sun, we can see it as a sign of God. Not everyone can meet the Jesus.

What do you think about the situation in Middle East when Christianity and other religion fight for the holy land?
-I don’t really know what happen but I think that Judaism, Islamic and Christianity should not fight for the holy land. If you really believe in your religion, really believe in your gods and goddess, then everywhere in the world will be the holy land.

Do you have a solution to the problem in the Middle East?
-In my opinion, I think that we should not fight and kill each other like that. I think that we should share the land because if we fight like this, soon the 3 religions will have serious problem with each other. We need to respect each other and each other religion.

If we’re a follower, then will we go to the church several times?
-Well, if you are a follower, you must come to the church once a week. Or maybe you can come to the church to pray or to communicate with gods. You can come to the church on holy days like: Christmas, Baptism, Easter…

Cha Tam Church

May 2, 2011
Cha Tam Church

Front of Cha Tam Church
On May 2nd, Johnny and I went to a Cha Tam Church in District 5 along with two of our friends. The first thing we saw was a statue of Mother Mary. On the wall, there were two images of Chinese and Vietnamese Martyrs (People who were killed that refused to give up their religion). When we were about to enter the church, we saw multiple Chinese words and near the entrance, there was memorial grave for Franciscus Xaverius Assou who was the priest that created Cha Tam Church. Right when you step into the church, it feels quiet and peaceful and didn’t smell like anything. However, we didn’t see anyone in the church except two foreigners visiting the church too. We don’t know what they wear in Cha Tam Church but being in other churches in other countries, I’ve seen the priest wear a long robe. Although, each church may be different therefore we are not sure. Inside the church you can see multiple images of Jesus hung on the sides of the church. In the front, there you will see a statue of Mother Mary, a statue of Jesus, and one thing very common in Christian churches is Jesus on the cross.  One main symbol in the church is the cross which symbolizes the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and also symbolizes the religion, Christianity. The two stained glass windows represent events throughout Jesus Christ’s life; however to us it is indefinite which events they were. Lastly, the picture we saw under the cross is the last supper of Jesus Christ which shows his followers and himself together. Before leaving Cha Tam Church, Georgina and I took the time to pray since it has been long since we’ve gone to church. Cha Tam Church has been here for more than 100 years and it’s good to see how the church is different from other churches we have all seen before.

Relating Questions to Harrison Bergeron

1. Life in Vietnam would be perfect if everyone were totally equal. Do you agree or disagree? Explain your answer in complete sentences.
  • If everyone were totally equal, I don't think life in Vietnam would be perfect because it would be less developed compared to other countries who keep things unequal therefore they can share ideas. Some people maybe smarter than others and with intelligence, we can help the country improve.
2. You are designing a society in which everyone is equal. What are the laws?
  • The laws would be:
                1. whether you have talent or not, you must do specific things to not increase your intelligence from the rest
                2. lower level people must work harder or will be fined
                3. advance people must work rather than study or it depends

3. What would you do to help who were less capable mentally, physically, or socially to "catch up"?
  • In order for me to help the less capable, I would make a law for all schools to pay attention to the less capable before moving on to another thing in order to catch up.
4. What problems can you foresee that might come in a society with laws that force "equality for all"? How would you handle those problems?
  • I can imagine smart people getting rich and lower level people getting poor because the intelligent people can use their intelligence in order to be successful while the lower level people are suffering. I would handle these types of problem by making some things equal and some not.
5. Do you believe that total equality is possible, or would human nature make sure that some people would eventually dominate others?
  • It maybe possible but at the same time some people may dominate others. How? They can dominate others depending on how high class they are. If they are rich, they are most likely be able to do what they want. If they are not rich, they are able to do less things. The more money you have, the more power you have.
6.  In what situations have you felt similarly to any of the characters? What persons, places, or ideas from your own experience came to mind while you were reading this story? Try to list at least two examples.
  • 1. When I sometimes try to state an effective idea to my parents, they deny it because they find my thought childish, therefore they use their own ideas instead. So it's like the smart people having to be given weights in order to have less power.
  • 2. Since I'm the youngest in the house, I'm mostly the one being told to do things. So it's like my older cousins are the government and i'm the citizens that are being told to do things.

Command Economy

Command Economy
Have you ever experienced living in a country where no rights are given? In some countries it is all about what the government wants and what they want to control. Command economy prevents individuals to have their own freedom and creativity.
First of all, human beings deserve to have their freedom, without freedom; life will basically be controlled by another person or anyone who has a lot of power. In the story “The Wise Old Woman,” old people are thought as useless by the lord, therefore they are being pressured to leave the village at the age of seventy-one. When the village is given tasks to do in order to not be conquered, the lord nor anyone else knows how to solve the problem. An old woman who has been hiding uses her knowledge to solve the solutions which save the village. Here the people learns that whether how old you are, you can still be useful in a way people do not realize. Freedom gives you the ability to state your opinion and to do what you desire. If the government in a command economy is the only one allowed to decide, opinions of individuals that may be right won’t ever be heard. However, not only freedom should be given more to people in command economies, but also creativity.
With the use of everyone’s creative ideas, countries can be strong and highly develop. North America is not a command economy because it listens to what people say and the government makes good uses out of it, turning them into one of the top market economies in the world. Unlike market economy, people in a command economy would not be able to earn their own profits, control their products, or be successful in their own ways. Everyone should have the rights to be successful in their own ways. Therefore, if the government has too much control, people may begin to protest just like in the Tiananmen Square massacre where 2,600 people died in 1989. Creativity and freedom are very limited in a command economy for the individuals. Therefore if it wasn’t, the command economies may possibly be more successful than they currently are because people can share ideas that might be useful for the government.
People in command economies should be capable to do anything just like how the government can. Freedom and creativity are the keys to strengthen developments. If they don’t start to exist in command economies for the people, mistakes will never be fixed or learned from. In conclusion, do you think countries with a command economy should start changing its living ways?

November 2 : Q & A

1. How does advertising influence consumption?

- Advertising influence consumption by trying to get people's attention to buy products. The more products sold the more resources are being used to produce the products.

2. Do you think citizens are sufficiently informed about the sustainability of our consumption habits? If not, how can we become more informed about sustainability issues?

 - I don't think citizens are informed about the sustainability of our consumption habits. We can become more informed about sustainability issues by creating advertisements just like how we use advertisements for products.

3. Do you think these advertising techniques influence what you and your friends purchase?

- Yes, i do think these advertising techniques influence what my friends and I purchase because advertisements are the things that get us to want the product and no one can prevent themselves from looking at an advertisement. Advertisements are seen everywhere!
